Roderick Buchanan

September 21 - October 19, 2001

Press Release

Formal sports and informal games feature regularly in Buchanan's practice, examined as a means of assessing how our recreational activities – what we do with time that is our own – express and communicate identities. Buchanan's interest is not the competition per se but in the big issues of race, nationality, culture and identity, aspiration and allegiance which surrounds the fields of play.

For this exhibition Roderick Buchanan will present a series of new video installations as well as new photographic pieces. Among these will be a new work made with Edinburgh's premier baseball club. Two projections will face each other across the gallery. The viewer will hear the hissing sound of the ball appear for an instant in one mitt before it is sent hissing back across the space.

Last year Roderick Buchanan won the Becks Futures Prize and The Spirit of Scotland Prize sponsored by The Independent and Glynfyddich. He has exhibited extensively throughout Europe and the USA. He recently had a major one person exhibition at Dundee Contemporary Arts. He is currently exhibiting at the Venice Biennale in the exhibition "A Plateau of Humanity" curated by Harald Szeeman. This exhibition will be Buchanan's first show at the Lisson Gallery. He lives and works in Glasgow.
